⚽ The Complete Parent’s Guide to Youth Soccer in Santa Ana

5 min read

So your child wants to play soccer. ⚽

Now you're wondering:

What do I need to buy? Are $150 cleats necessary? What size shin guards do they need? What happens at the first practice? Do I need to bring snacks? And where exactly am I supposed to be Saturday morning?! 😭

Don't worry—we've got you.

At JAM Sports League, we help Santa Ana families get their kids on the field, whether they're kicking a soccer ball for the first time or already dreaming about scoring the winning goal.

Here's everything parents should know before soccer season starts.

🎒 First Things First: What Does My Child Actually Need?

Good news: You don't need to walk into a sporting goods store and buy everything in sight.

For most youth soccer players, start with:

JAM Parent Tip: Before buying anything expensive, check what your team or league provides.

Your 6-year-old probably does not need professional-level cleats for their first season. 😅

Save that money for the post-game snacks.

Soccer cleats might be the one thing your child is very opinionated about.

They want the cool ones.

You want the affordable ones.

We understand both sides. 😂

But the most important thing isn't the brand—it's the fit.

Cleats should fit snugly without hurting your child's feet. They should be able to comfortably wiggle their toes, run, stop and change direction.

Try not to buy cleats several sizes too big just because they'll “grow into them.”

Soccer involves a LOT of running, and poorly fitting cleats can make playing uncomfortable.

Beginner player? Start simple. Your child can always upgrade later as they grow and become more serious about the sport.

🦵 Yes, They Really Need Shin Guards

If cleats are the exciting purchase, shin guards are the purchase kids forget about until you're already halfway to the field.

Keep them in the soccer bag. Trust us. 😂

Shin guards protect the lower legs during practices and games and should fit securely underneath soccer socks.

Choose the appropriate size based on your child's height and make sure they're comfortable enough to run without constantly adjusting them.

Parent hack: After practice, put the shin guards right back into the soccer bag.

Future-you will be grateful.

🏃 The First Practice: What Should You Expect?

First practices can feel intimidating, especially if your child has never played organized soccer.

That's completely normal.

At a typical youth soccer practice, players may work on:

⚽ Dribbling🤝 Passing🥅 Shooting🏃 Running and movement🎯 Ball control🧠 Learning soccer rules🙌 Teamwork⚽ Small practice games

Your child doesn't need to show up already knowing how to play.

That's why they're joining!

Youth soccer gives kids the opportunity to learn skills, become more active, meet teammates and build confidence over time.

At JAM Sports League, players of different experience levels can get involved and develop their skills while being part of our local soccer community.

😅 What If My Child Has Never Played Soccer?

Perfect.

Seriously.

Every soccer player had a first practice.

Your child doesn't need years of experience to start learning the game. What's more important is being willing to participate, listen, practice and have fun.

You might be surprised how quickly kids pick things up once they're actually on the field.

If you've been waiting because you think your child “isn't ready yet,” their first season might be exactly how they get ready.

🎒 The Soccer Bag Parents Should Keep Ready

Want to make soccer days approximately 87% less stressful?

Create a dedicated soccer bag.

Keep these items inside:

Cleats + shin guards + soccer socks + water bottle + uniform + soccer ball if needed.

After laundry day, put everything back.

Because nothing tests a parent's patience quite like hearing:

“Mom, I can't find my other shin guard!”

...five minutes before you're supposed to leave. 😭

Southern California soccer can get warm.

Players should have access to plenty of water before, during and after physical activity.

Don't send your child with the world's tiniest water bottle and expect it to survive an entire afternoon at the field.

A larger reusable bottle is usually the better move.

And yes...

Put their name on it.

Because apparently every child owns the exact same water bottle. 😂

🍊 What Snacks Should I Bring?

Soccer snacks don't need to be complicated.

Simple options can include:

🍌 Bananas🍊 Orange slices🍎 Fruit🥨 Pretzels🧀 Simple packaged snacks💧 Water

For tournaments or longer game days, you may want to pack additional food.

If you're bringing snacks for the whole team, always check with your coach first because players may have allergies or dietary restrictions.

And parents...

Please don't let your child eat a giant heavy meal five minutes before they're supposed to start running. 😭

📅 Soccer Schedules: Your New Best Friend

Once soccer season starts, your calendar becomes very important.

Practice.

Game.

Another practice.

Saturday game.

Tournament.

Schedule change.

Different field.

Welcome to being a soccer parent. 😂⚽

As soon as you receive your schedule, add everything to your phone calendar.

Make sure you're checking for:

📍 Field location⏰ Arrival time⚽ Game time🏃 Practice time📢 Coach announcements🔄 Schedule changes🏆 Tournament information

Important: Always check your schedule before leaving home. Youth sports schedules can change.

JAM Sports League families can use our website to stay connected with league information, registration details and upcoming soccer opportunities.

⏰ How Early Should We Arrive?

If practice starts at 6:00 PM, pulling into the parking lot at 5:59 PM probably isn't your best strategy. 😅

For practices, getting there approximately 10–15 minutes early is a good general habit unless your coach tells you otherwise.

Games may require players to arrive even earlier for warm-ups and team preparation.

Always follow your coach's instructions for your specific team.

❤️ Your Most Important Job: Be Their Biggest Fan

Your child will miss goals.

They'll make mistakes.

They might lose games.

They might also score their first goal, make an incredible pass, meet their new best friend or discover a sport they love.

That's youth soccer.

Of course everyone likes winning, but youth sports can also help children develop:

💪 Confidence🤝 Teamwork🗣️ Communication🧠 Discipline🏃 Healthy habits❤️ Resilience

After the game, instead of immediately asking:

“Did you win?”

Try:

“Did you have fun?”

or

“What was your favorite part of the game?”

Sometimes that's the conversation they'll remember.
